How to care for a leopard gecko?

Equipment

You need a 40cmX30cmX30cm tank. Common choices are acrylic or glass tanks. On a tight budget, a plastic storage box works too. It costs less. Just add holes for air flow.

You need a heating pad and a thermostat. Keep the warm area at 28 to 32 degrees Celsius. For floor material, kitchen paper or wax paper is safe and easy to change. For stronger floor material, reptile mats work well.

Besides these basics, the leopard gecko needs a hideout. This makes it feel safe. For a personal touch, you can make the hideout yourself. As the gecko grows, make the hideout bigger. This keeps it comfortable.

Housing environment

Pick a tank with good air flow and easy cleaning. This gives the gecko a comfortable home. The tank size should be right. Give enough moving space. Do not make it too big and scary. For temperature, remember geckos are cold-blooded. They feel temperature changes strongly. Keep the tank between 28-32℃. Use heating pads or lamps to control temperature. This keeps it healthy.

Lighting

The leopard gecko is a night animal. It is most busy at night. It needs little UV light. But it can take in some UV at dawn and dusk. Some UVA and UVB light helps its health. It lowers bone issues. For good health, it needs enough vitamin D. Good lighting helps make this vitamin. Use light bulbs to act like sun. Give 14 hours of light in summer. Give 12 hours in winter. A timer for the lights is easier.

Humidity

The leopard gecko needs a fairly dry home. This stops skin and breathing problems. Use a humidity gauge at the cool end. Keep humidity between 30% and 40%. If humidity is too high, add more air flow. Also, give a moist hideout. This gives them a spot with right humidity.

Interactive Training

Start training when it is young. Play with it 5 to 10 minutes daily. Slowly make play time longer. Do not grab its tail. It might drop its tail. New leopard geckos need 3 to 5 days rest. Give good hiding spots. Reduce disturbances.

Daily care

Give a special water dish. Water must be pure. Keep water clean. Change water every three days. This stops sickness from dirty water. Note: the gecko needs water but not too much. Too much water can cause health issues like fluid buildup. For bedding, pick safe materials. Kitchen paper, butcher paper or reptile sand are good. These are easy to clean and safe.

Regular cleaning

Remove uneaten food daily. Clean the cage and inside items fully every two weeks. Use mild soap water. Or mix one cap of bleach with one gallon of water to disinfect. Pet stores sell special cage cleaners too. Iodine solution and Nova Dispersant are examples. After cleaning, rinse well. Dry completely. Then put the leopard gecko back.

Diet

Leopard geckos eat mainly insects. Mealworms, crickets and Dubia roaches are examples. Feed fresh, clean food. Do not overfeed. Keep food amounts right. For health, give calcium powder and vitamins regularly. Mix calcium and vitamins in a 1:3 ratio. Feed them with insects. Do this 2-3 times weekly. This helps it get needed nutrients.

Health Monitoring

Good droppings are black and solid with white uric acid. If droppings stay soft, it might have parasites. Watch the shedding process too. Young geckos shed skin 1-2 times monthly. Adults shed once every 1-2 months. If old skin remains, soak it in warm water. Wipe it off gently.

While keeping a leopard gecko, some health issues may occur. Stomach issues or egg binding are examples. But keep the temperature right. Give calcium powder regularly. Reduce environmental stress. Then the leopard gecko becomes a calm life companion. It can live with you for up to 15 years.

Check your gecko often. Watch its energy, appetite and droppings. Leopard geckos are night animals. They rest mostly by day. So try not to disturb it by day. Let it rest enough. Finally, keep the tank sealed well. Stop the gecko from escaping. Keep other pets or children away from it. Prevent accidents.

Leopard geckos live quite long. They typically live 8 to 10 years or more. During this time, it becomes part of your life. It sees your life moments. Over time, your bond with the leopard gecko grows stronger. It will know your voice and smell. Each time you come home, it waits quietly for you. It seems to welcome you back. This long-term companionship builds a silent understanding. This is something many pets cannot offer.
